Common questions

Does Dollars & Pence connect to my bank?

No. Dollars & Pence is fully manual entry — you decide what goes in. It does not integrate with any bank, financial institution, or open-banking provider. This is intentional: it means no third party is involved in your data.

How does iCloud sync work?

If you're signed in to iCloud and have iCloud Drive enabled for Dollars & Pence, your data syncs automatically across all your Apple devices through Apple's CloudKit service. The data sits in your private iCloud container — only your devices have access. We never see it.

You can turn sync off in Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Apps Using iCloud → Dollars & Pence.

How do I move my data to a new phone?

If iCloud sync is enabled, just sign in to iCloud on the new device, install Dollars & Pence, and your data will sync down automatically. Otherwise, use Settings → Export Data on the old device, transfer the file, and use Settings → Import Data on the new device.

How does the AI category suggestion work?

Dollars & Pence learns from your own transaction history using Apple's NaturalLanguage framework, all on your device. As you categorise transactions, it improves at suggesting categories for new ones with similar descriptions. Nothing is ever sent to a server.

Can I search receipts I've attached?

Yes. When you attach a receipt photo, Dollars & Pence uses Apple's Vision framework to extract the text on-device. That text is indexed alongside the transaction, so a search for "Tesco" or "£42.99" will find the matching receipt. OCR runs locally — your images never leave your device.

What can I ask Siri to do?

You can say "Hey Siri, add expense in Dollars and Pence" or "Hey Siri, add income in Dollars and Pence" and Siri will guide you through entering the amount and account. The same actions are available as building blocks in the Shortcuts app, so you can wire them into automations.

Why does my projected balance differ from my real bank balance?

The projection engine calculates a future balance based on recurring agreements and transactions you've entered. It will only match your bank if you keep your transactions up to date. The "balance" figure always reflects completed transactions only — pending and projected amounts are shown separately on top.

Why is a payment showing on the wrong date?

The app automatically shifts payments that fall on weekends or bank holidays based on each agreement's settings. If an agreement is set to "next working day", payments on Saturday or Sunday move to Monday. If set to "preceding working day", they move to Friday. Add bank holidays in Settings → Bank Holidays so they're treated the same way.

What's included in the Free tier vs Premium?

The Free tier includes balance projections, recurring agreements, transactions, AI categorisation, receipt OCR, tags, budgets, saved queries, Siri shortcuts, iCloud sync, and up to 2 accounts. Premium adds unlimited accounts, Home-Screen and Lock-Screen widgets, Apple Watch complications, Face ID lock, and import/export.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions are managed through your Apple ID. Open Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions on your iPhone, tap Dollars & Pence, and choose Cancel. Access continues until the end of the current billing period. Refunds are handled by Apple — request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.

What currencies are supported?

The app supports a wide range of currencies and lets you set manual exchange rates between them. You can pick a default display currency in Settings → Currency.

What languages are supported?

English and Spanish. The app follows your device's language setting.

Does Dollars & Pence work on iPad and Apple Watch?

Yes. The same app runs on iPhone and iPad. There's a companion Apple Watch app for quick adds and a complication that shows your projected balance on the watch face (Premium).
