1. Who we are
Dollars & Pence is a personal finance application for iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, developed by Dave Hulmes. This policy explains how the app handles your information. The website for the app is dollarsandpence.com.
2. Data we collect
We — the developer — collect none of your personal data. The app does not have user accounts, does not require sign-in, and does not transmit any data to servers we operate. There is no telemetry, no analytics, and no advertising SDK.
3. Where your data is stored
The data you enter into Dollars & Pence is stored in two places, both controlled by you:
- On your device. Accounts, transactions, agreements, categories, tags, budgets, notes, queries, attachments, and preferences are persisted using Apple's SwiftData and UserDefaults frameworks.
- In your private iCloud container (only if you are signed in to iCloud and have iCloud Drive enabled for Dollars & Pence). Data syncs through Apple's CloudKit using a private database tied to your Apple ID. We have no access to this container — only your devices do.
You can disable iCloud sync at any time via Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Apps Using iCloud → Dollars & Pence.
4. On-device intelligence
Dollars & Pence uses Apple's NaturalLanguage framework to suggest categories and tags based on your transaction history, and Apple's Vision framework to extract text from receipt images you attach (OCR). Both run entirely on your device. No image, transaction, or text is sent to us, to Apple, or to any third party for these features.
5. Permissions the app requests
The app may ask for the following iOS permissions, each used only for the purpose described:
- Camera — to scan receipts and attach them to transactions
- Photo Library — to attach existing receipt images
- Face ID — to unlock the app (optional biometric lock)
- Microphone & Speech Recognition — to dictate transaction amounts on Apple Watch
- Notifications — to remind you before recurring payments
All permissions are optional. The app remains functional if you decline them.
6. Data we do not collect
- No analytics or usage tracking
- No crash reports sent to us
- No advertising identifiers (IDFA)
- No location data
- No contact information
- No banking credentials or live bank connections
7. Subscriptions and payments
Dollars & Pence offers an optional Premium subscription processed entirely by Apple via the App Store. We never see your payment details. Apple shares aggregated, anonymised purchase data with us (number of subscribers, churn, etc.) — never anything that identifies you. See Apple's privacy policy for how Apple handles purchases.
8. Third-party services
Dollars & Pence does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, or data services. The app uses only Apple's own iOS frameworks (SwiftData, CloudKit, Vision, NaturalLanguage, App Intents, WidgetKit). Apple's privacy practices apply at the operating system layer — see apple.com/privacy.
9. Data export and import
The app includes data export and import features. Exported files are saved to a location you choose and shared via iOS's standard share sheet. We never receive these files.
10. Backups and data loss
If iCloud sync is enabled, your data is backed up to your iCloud account automatically. If not, we recommend enabling iOS device backups (iCloud Backup or Finder/iTunes backup) and exporting your data periodically.
11. Children's privacy
Dollars & Pence is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.
12. Changes to this policy
If we update this policy we will update the date at the top and publish the revised version here. Material changes will be communicated through an app update.
